Sweet Potato Cheesecake is a creamy dessert combining the richness of cheesecake with the comforting flavor of sweet potatoes and spices. This dessert is a celebration of heritage, holiday gatherings, and the transformation of humble ingredients into something deeply indulgent.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 medium sweet potatoes)
  • 24 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
  • Toasted pecans (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs and ¼ cup sugar.
  3. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture resembles wet sand.
  4. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan.
  5. Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then let it cool while you prepare the filling.
  6. If using fresh sweet potatoes, peel and boil them until fork-tender, then mash until smooth. Let the mashed sweet potatoes cool.
  7. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  8. Add 1 cup sugar and beat until combined.
  9. Mix in the sour cream and vanilla extract.
  10. Add the mashed sweet potatoes, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Mix until fully blended.
  11. Add the eggs one at a time, beating just until each is incorporated; do not overmix.
  12. Pour the sweet potato cheesecake batter over the prepared crust.
  13. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles.
  14. Place the springform pan on a baking sheet and bake for 60-70 minutes, or until the center is just set but still slightly jiggly.
  15. Turn off the oven, crack the oven door, and let the cheesecake cool gradually for 1 hour.
  16. Transfer the cheesecake to the fridge and chill for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  17. Once fully chilled, carefully remove the sweet potato cheesecake from the springform pan.
  18. Garnish with whipped cream or toasted pecans if desired.
  19. Slice with a warm knife for clean edges, and enjoy the rich, spiced flavor of this homemade sweet potato cheesecake.

Notes

  • This sweet potato cheesecake recipe is best made a day ahead so the flavors can fully develop and the texture sets beautifully.
  • Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
  • Room temperature ingredients help the batter come together smoothly without lumps.
  • To avoid cracks, bake in a water bath or place a tray of water in the oven.
  • Let the cheesecake cool slowly to prevent sudden temperature changes.
  • For extra flavor depth, try adding a touch of maple syrup to the batter.
  • For a nutty twist, mix chopped pecans into the crust.
