Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour: 2 1/4 cups
  • Granulated Sugar: 2 cups
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: 3/4 cup
  • Baking Soda: 2 teaspoons
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Large Eggs: 2
  • Buttermilk: 1 cup
  • Vegetable Oil: 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla Extract: 2 teaspoons
  • Hot Water or Coffee: 1 cup
  • Crushed Oreos: 12 cookies
  • Softened Unsalted Butter: 1 cup
  • Powdered Sugar: 4 cups
  • Heavy Cream (for frosting): 2-3 tablespoons
  • Dark Chocolate Chips: 1 cup
  • Heavy Cream (for ganache): 1/2 cup
  • Whole Oreos: For garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in the hot water or coffee until the batter is smooth.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Tap lightly to remove air bubbles.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  8. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in the crushed Oreos and heavy cream until smooth and fluffy.
  9. Stack the cake layers, spreading frosting between each layer.
  10. Apply a thin crumb coat of frosting to the entire cake and chill for 20 minutes.
  11. Apply the final layer of frosting evenly over the cake.
  12. For the ganache, heat 1/2 cup of heavy cream until steaming. Pour over the dark chocolate chips, let sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  13. Let the ganache cool slightly until it reaches a pourable consistency.
  14. Carefully drip the ganache over the edges of the cake.
  15. Decorate the top of the cake with whole Oreos.
  16. Chill the cake for 30 minutes before slicing and serving at room temperature.

Notes

  • Using coffee instead of hot water will deepen the chocolate flavor.
  • Allow the ganache to cool to the correct consistency for a clean drip effect.
  • Chilling the cake between decorating stages helps create a more structured finish.
  • Finely crush the Oreos for a smoother frosting texture.
