Ingredients

Scale
  • For the pastry dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • For the filling:
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • For finishing:
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Fruit preserves or fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl. Add cold butter and cream cheese. Cut in until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Form into a ball, flatten into a disc, wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: Beat softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and egg yolk until smooth.
  3. Roll and Shape: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into 3-inch shapes. Spoon filling into the center of each piece. Add fruit preserves if desired.
  4. Fold and Seal: Fold dough diagonally over filling to create a turnover, sealing edges with a fork, or fold corners inward and pinch to seal.
  5. Egg Wash and Bake: Whisk egg and milk for egg wash. Brush pastries. Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let pastries cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Customize with nuts, fruit, or a cinnamon-sugar topping.
  • Delightful fresh, but still tasty the next day.
  • Can be made ahead and frozen unbaked.
