Ingredients
Scale
1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 slices of rye bread (or your choice of bread)
4 slices of Swiss cheese (or your favorite cheese)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
1 tablespoon butter (for grilling)
Instructions
In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté the sliced onions until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
In a bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then form into two equal-sized patties.
In the same skillet, push the onions to one side and add the beef patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, ensuring they reach your desired doneness.
Once the patties are nearly cooked, place a slice of cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet briefly to melt the cheese.
While the cheese melts, spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. In a separate skillet, toast the bread slices over medium heat until golden brown.
On the non-buttered side of two slices of bread, spread Dijon mustard if using. Place the cheesy patty on top, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side out.
Return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden brown.
Once grilled, remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them sit for a minute before slicing.
Notes
Choose Your Bread Wisely: Experiment with sourdough or brioche for a richer flavor.
Experiment with Cheese: Try sharp cheddar, pepper jack, or gouda to customize your melt.
Add Extra Vegetables: Consider adding sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or jalapeños for added flavor.
Make it Spicy: Add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to your patty mix.
Garlic Butter: Use garlic-infused butter for grilling the bread to add extra flavor.
