Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until well combined.
  4. Stir in the boiling water carefully. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
  5. Fold in the chopped pecans gently, distributing them evenly throughout the batter.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. If making homemade caramel, prepare it while the cakes are cooling.
  10. Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle some chocolate chips.
  11. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the process, drizzling caramel sauce and adding chocolate chips on top.
  12. Finish with a generous amount of caramel sauce and a sprinkle of chopped pecans for decoration.
